Amoeba Upgrades: The amoeba development is focused on infrastructure, allowing them to increase their organelle limits, strengthen their cell walls, develop neural networks to allow secondary colonies to link to the main colony, and improve the efficiency of their existing organelles in general. Amoeba conduct research individually. Just like special abilities, a cell needs to have a certain combination of qualities before it can start researching an upgrade. However, once researched, the upgrade affects all cells in the colony. Special abilities do not need to be researched, but some of the more advanced abilities might have prerequisites that are difficult to fulfill without appropriate upgrades in the area. For instance, the "digestive slam" ability requires six lysosomes to learn and 25 power to use. However the basic cell has only six organelle spots and 10 power. Thus, even though a basic cell can learn the ability, it won't have enough power to use it unless it's under the effect of a special condition like dense salt water. To effectively use the ability, the colony must first research "endoplasmic reticulum" to increase the organelle limit, allowing the cell to add two mitochondrion to his body, increasing his power amount to sufficient levels.
